In Morocco

for Mrs Mina Tounsi
Chargé d'Affaires of The Kingdom of Morocco in Dublin
I have never been to Morocco
Have you?
I have dreamed about it and if there what I might do
Ride a mule to Marrakech or join a caravan to Fez
Have a laugh along the road like Bing Crosby and Bob Hope
I want a little red pillbox hat with a black tassel
Like the one Tommy Cooper wore
Although they come in colours now
Emerald like the Atlas Mountains
Beryl blue like the southern Mediterranean
Sahara like the wraps of John Lavery’s Moorish Madonna
Oh yes this ancient place is what my heart wants now
The centre of the spinning world
For far too long we have misunderstood the secrets of our past
Failed to find the common ancestry of all our dreams
It is time to call a meeting of the human race
To look into each other’s eyes
And kiss that face
