2003 Award Recipient
JEAN KELLY
Founder of Speedwell Trust

Jean KellyIn 1991, Jean Kelly founded Speedwell Trust, a voluntary organization working for peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland. Speedwell brings together Catholic and Protestant children, and schools and communities in order to develop mutual respect and understanding.

Each year, more than 20,000 children and adults receive cross community environmental education.

Speedwell pays particular attention to the social, cultural and physical needs of pre-school children and children with special needs. The Trust has constructed a Secret Garden specifically designed to meet the needs of children with physical and learning disabilities.

Mrs. Kelly, a qualified teacher, is a native of Dungannon, Co. Tyrone. She is married with one daughter. Mrs. Kelly is Presbyterian and her husband is Catholic; therefore, she has a very personal interest in bringing members of both communities together. She has received the Member of the British Empire Award (MBE) from the Queen for her services in bringing children together in Northern Ireland.

An unsung hero in her country, she represents the true spirit of The Harry McKillop Irish Spirit Award. The Board of Trustees is delighted to present her with the 2003 award.
